Stephen Curry’s Plezi Hydration Relaunches, Eyeing National Expansion

Co-founded with Ayesha Curry and Michelle Obama, Plezi returns with a reformulated product, refreshed branding and a broader push beyond traditional sports drinks

Plezi Hydration, a brand co-founded by Stephen Curry, Ayesha Curry and former First Lady Michelle Obama, is entering its next phase with a reformulated product, refreshed packaging and a broader positioning that extends beyond traditional sports drinks.

First started in 2023, Plezi is relaunching this spring with an updated formula designed for both athletes and everyday consumers.

The product is made with real fruit juice, contains no added sugar or artificial colors and delivers twice the electrolytes plus seven times the potassium compared to leading competitors, according to Plezi. The brand is positioning its drink as a performance-driven hydration option that also prioritizes taste and accessibility.

In a conversation with Athletech News, Stephen Curry said the relaunch reflects a renewed focus on both the product and its shelf presence.

“We’re excited about the relaunch,” he told ATN. “It’s a renewed energy around not just what’s on the outside of the bottle and the packaging, but how we reformulated the ingredients, added a new flavor and continue to elevate the entire Plezi Hydration offering.”

“We wanted something that, when you see it on the shelves, whether you know what Plezi is or not, it jumps off and piques your curiosity… and feels like a premium experience,” Curry added.

For Ayesha, the reformulation centered on balancing nutritional performance with flavor, an area she noted was often difficult to get right.

“For us, it was making sure we lead the market. Having zero sugar and two times the electrolytes of leading brands on the market was really important,” she said. “From a flavor profile perspective, I wanted to be a part of creating the best-tasting hydration drink on the market, and I really think we’ve done that.”

She said the development process involved extensive iteration, down to the drink’s texture and overall feel.

“Testing, lots of notes, lots of going back, even on viscosity. Mouth feel is important,” she said of the development process. “You want something you crave. Making sure the formula wasn’t too thick, making sure it actually tastes like the fruit on the bottle, those things were so important to us.”

Beyond formulation, the brand is also working to balance performance credibility with everyday usability, a positioning that Stephen said is central to its growth strategy.

“There’s a fine balance: you want a specific consumer, but also to be accessible across a wide range of active lifestyles, from kids at school or youth sports all the way through the professional level,” he said. “Everybody, in their own way, should be leading an active, healthy lifestyle, and hopefully this can be an additive to that.”

Ayesha also pointed to potassium as a key differentiator, particularly for consumers focused on recovery.

“If you’re performing day to day, whether you’re a kid, a college athlete or a professional, you don’t want to cramp,” Ayesha said. “Having that extra potassium helps with that.”

The relaunch builds on a regional rollout strategy that has so far focused on the West Coast, where the brand has leaned into retail partnerships and grassroots activations tied to youth sports.

“We’re trying to grow appropriately and make sure it’s positioned for success, especially with how we’re telling the story of what’s in the bottle and why it’s different,” Stephen said. “We started very regionally on the West Coast, with activations around youth sports and getting product in people’s hands. That feedback helped us develop 2.0, and now it’s about building that stickiness and continuing to grow nationally.”

Ayesha added that demand outside those regions is already building.

“I have my sister calling me saying she went to Harris Teeter in North Carolina and didn’t see it, and I went, we’re working on it, I promise,” she said. “We’ve always been ‘crawl before you walk’ people.”

For the Currys, the brand reflects a longer-term vision, both as entrepreneurs and as a family.

“From the initial conversation with both President and First Lady Obama — it’s still crazy, saying that out loud —we were looking forward to working together and bringing our expertise together to something that matters,” Stephen said. “Because we got to include our kids in the process and make something they can be proud of, it means the world. We’re just getting started.”

Ayesha said that vision also includes expanding how consumers think about hydration, positioning the product as something that fits into a wide range of daily routines.

“This is not just for athletes. It’s for moms on the go, busy working people, kids at school,” she said. “You can implement it into your life however you like. And it’s also really great in cocktails. A little tequila, shake it up cold, and you’ve got a very low, no sugar cocktail. It’s all about balance.”
