Elgton Jenkins will be the Green Bay Packers’ center in 2025.
Jenkins making the moving from left guard to center was anticipated after Green Bay signed guard Aaron Banks to a four-year, $77 million deal in free agency. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst made the move official while speaking at the NFL owners meetings Monday.
“We had plenty of conversations with Elgton leading up to it and obviously he played center in college,” Gutekunst told reporters. “We feel he’s got a chance to be an All-Pro center.
“We’ve talked about it a lot, how versatility plays into our offensive line and having guys that can move to different spots, and Elgton’s one of those guys who can play all five spots. So he’s a luxury, but I’m excited to see what he can do at center, as well.”
Jenkins, a two-time Pro Bowler, is arguably Green Bay’s most versatile offensive lineman in many years. He’s made 85 career starts including 67 at left guard, eight at left tackle, six at right tackle and four at center.
In 2020, Jenkins became the first Packer to start a game at guard, center and tackle since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.
Jenkins started 16 games at left guard and one at center in 2024. The Packers signed Banks and let center Josh Myers walk in free agency, though, leaving a gaping hole at center.
The versatile Jenkins now gets first crack at the opening, with Banks sliding into his old left guard spot.
The 27-year-old Banks was a second round draft pick of San Francisco in 2021 (No. 48 overall). Banks appeared in 53 games for the 49ers and made 43 starts over the last four years.
According to Pro Football Focus, Banks allowed just one sack in 775 snaps last season. PFF also had Banks ranked 37th out of 135 guards in run blocking and 77th out of 135 guards in pass blocking.
