CUTHBERT, Ga. (WALB) – From futuristic technology to real-world impact, cryptocurrency is now fueling tax dollars and development in South Georgia.
A new crypto mining facility has officially opened in Randolph County, and leaders say it could provide big benefits for the local economy.

Mayor of Cuthbert Bobby Jenkins says the investment is welcome in an area that has long faced economic challenges.
“We are in an economically challenged area, so any opportunity to generate additional revenue, we welcome that opportunity,” Jenkins said. “Just having them in our county, we’ll benefit because that’s additional equipment that will be added to our tax digest. So that will help lower our tax digest for the county, which is always something that’s good.”
The crypto mine consists of a network of computers that solve complex math problems to secure Bitcoin transactions. Project leaders call it a step toward the future of currency and assets.

“If I want to transfer amounts to pay companies, it may take several days on a wire transfer,” said Project Manager Hao Chen. “But with Bitcoin, I can send it overseas instantly — no delays, no currency changes.”
Why Randolph County?
Chen says Randolph County was an ideal location for several reasons. Cuthbert’s industrial park provided space away from neighborhoods, while the city’s infrastructure could handle the demands of a large-scale project.
“We ran a test on the quality of city water, and it turns out the city water is great. It doesn’t have any bad substances, and the mineral levels are much lower compared to other sites where we rely on wells,” Chen explained.
Powering Like 5,000 Homes
Crypto mining facilities are energy-intensive. A single-family household uses about 1.25 kilowatts per hour, while the data center consumes about 7 megawatts per hour — the equivalent of powering 5,000 homes.
Chen says that the scale of usage creates significant revenue opportunities for the community.
“All of a sudden, it’s 5,000 households that moved into this tiny data center, and it’s paying 5,000 households’ worth of utility bills. That translates directly into tax revenue the city can put back into building the community,” Chen said.
What’s Next
Randolph County isn’t the only South Georgia community entering the world of crypto mining. Atkinson County is next on the list, with another facility expected to break ground soon.
