WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event Adds Late Match To Card

I thought WWE was done adding matches to the card for Saturday Night’s Main Event in Tampa, Florida. Alas, Triple H and Co. were not; and I fear it may be bad news for fans of Zelina Vega and her Women’s U.S. Championship reign.

After Friday’s episode of SmackDown, WWE announced Vega would be defending her title against the woman she dethroned, Chelsea Green, in the fifth and likely final match added to the card.

Here’s a look at the updated card and the viewing information.

  • Date: Saturday, May 24
  • Time: 8 p.m. ET
  • TV/Stream: Peacock

WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event Matches

  • (c) Jey Uso vs. Logan Paul for the World Heavyweight Championship
  • CM Punk and Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins and Bron Breakker
  • John Cena vs. R-Truth – Non-Title Match
  • Damian Priest vs. Drew McIntyre – Steel Cage Match
  • (c) Zelina Vega vs. Chelsea Green – Women’s US Championship

In case you forgot, Zelina’s title reign hit 30 days on Saturday after having knocked Green off on the April 25 episode of SmackDown.

Green has remained heavily over with the WWE Universe, and the pop she received on Friday in Savannah, Georgia was noticeable. It’s a wonder if WWE made the decision to add the match because of that, or if it was always in the plans to have a fifth match to help support the card.

In any case, this feels like a spot where Vega will wind up losing the title.

If that’s the case, I’d have to say I think WWE would have been wise to give Vega the mic more during this slight push. I’d argue she is one of—if not the strongest—women on the roster when it comes to mic work.

She’s witty and fierce, and those skills are imperative considering she is smaller in stature. Vega’s in-ring ability allows her to perform well with any opponent, though there were some choppy moments in Friday’s Money in the Bank qualifying match with Charlotte Flair and Giulia.

From my standpoint, this looked to be more due to miscommunications and poor selling from Giulia than anything else. I get that Giulia has a dynamic presence, but overall, she is not as complete a performer as Vega.

I could argue the push and respect that Giulia is receiving could be a better fit on the Puerto Rican veteran. As it is, we may be set to see the end of Vega’s U.S. title reign. That’s likely the only title we’ll see change hands.

Jey Uso fans, you can relax. I would be floored if Logan Paul goes over—at least tonight. Paul’s time as champion is coming. You can take that to the bank—perhaps it is Money in the Bank—but it almost certainly won’t happen on Saturday Night’s Main Event.

Keep an eye on a potential link-up between Paul and John Cena. That could be the biggest thing that happens on Saturday. I’ll have post-event reaction and a recap following the show.
