From dietary-inclusive meals to green spaces and local culture, new wellness standards set clear criteria to help hotels prove authenticity and give travelers confidence in spotting the real deal over wellness-washing
For hotels eager to capitalize on the wellness boom, the bar for authenticity has just been raised.
Wellness in Travel & Tourism (WITT) and the Wellness Tourism Association (WTA) have introduced the Core Wellness Standards for Hotels, the first global framework designed to help properties integrate authentic wellness practices and stand out in a crowded market.
In terms of assisting travelers, the Core Wellness Standards are intended to give guests confidence that a property’s wellness offerings meet independently verified criteria, helping them avoid what WITT and WTA describe as “wellness-washing.”
Developed with input from WITT’s Standards Advisory Committee, the initiative draws from more than 100 benchmarks across nutrition, sustainability, fitness and hospitality. The standards are organized around five pillars: healthy eating, holistic healing, nature, movement and local impact, with requirements ranging from offering dietary-inclusive meals and filtered water to incorporating biophilic design and sourcing from local suppliers.
“Wellness travel is no longer a niche – it’s a priority for millions of travelers worldwide,” WITT vice president of wellness standards and development Oxana Spivey said. “These standards give hotels a clear, credible path to creating experiences that truly support well-being, while establishing a transparent definition of wellness in hospitality and elevating the overall guest experience.”
Robin Ruiz, founder and CEO of WITT and president and CEO of the WTA, said the launch will bring a “long-overdue level of clarity” to the wellness tourism sector. It also follows the WTA’s relaunch earlier this month as a for-profit entity under her leadership.
“It’s about creating a consistent, transparent definition of wellness in hospitality—one that strengthens trust, inspires innovation, and sets a new benchmark for the industry,” Ruiz said.
Certification applications are now open globally through WITT.
