Based on the popular 2021 video game franchise of the same name, The Last of Us premiered in 2023 to impressive viewing numbers for the network and went on to win eight Emmy Awards last year, including a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.
The first season is set 20 years after modern civilization is destroyed by Cordyceps, a mind-controlling parasitic fungus. Joel (Pedro Pascal) is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across the country to a hospital because she’s immune to the infection. Their journey is brutal and emotional, with danger at every turn as they fight to survive.
While the plot for seven-episode second season has been kept tightly under wraps, the show’s co-creator Craig Mazin told Entertainment Weekly that the second installment “will be different” from Part II of the video game—though it will still include a similar five-year time jump, during which Ellie’s age shifts from 14 to 19.
“It will be different just as this season was different [from the first game],” he explained. “Sometimes it will be different radically, and sometimes it will be [barely] different at all. But it’s going to be different and it will be its own thing. It won’t be exactly like the game. It will be the show that Neil and I want to make. But we are making it with Bella.”
“Five years after the events of the first season, Joel and Ellie are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind,” HBO’s official logline for Season 2 reads.
As for the cast, in addition to Pascal and Ramsey, Gabriel Luna will return as Joel’s younger brother, Tommy. New characters this season include Isabela Merced as Dina, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Mazino as Jesse, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, Ariela Barer as Mel, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Catherine O’Hara is also set to appear in Season 2.

Season 2 of The Last of Us premieres at 9 p.m. ET/PT on Sunday, April 13, on HBO and will also be available to stream on Max.

Max isn’t offering a free trial for new subscribers at the moment. However, the platform’s website says that if a “subscription plan or promotional offer includes a free trial, you’ll see mention of the free trial when you sign up.”
For example, Amazon Prime sometimes offers a seven-day free trial for its Max add-on. To see if the deal is available, log into your Prime account and check if you can add Max at no cost for the trial period.
