New tool offers lab-grade metabolic estimates for cyclists, developed with Dr. Iñigo San Millán

TrainingPeaks has officially launched Fueling Insights, a performance-focused feature that gives endurance coaches and athletes deeper visibility into fat and carbohydrate burn during power-based cycling workouts.

Developed in collaboration with Dr. Iñigo San Millán—renowned physiologist and former Director of Performance for Team UAE Emirates—the feature transforms ride data into highly specific fueling recommendations using a proprietary algorithm built from decades of RER lab testing. The tool categorizes each athlete’s output according to one of four metabolic profiles, taking gender and ride dynamics into account to deliver real-time insights previously only accessible in lab settings.

“Fueling Insights bridges the gap between advanced science and everyday training,” said Dirk Friel, co-founder of TrainingPeaks. “It gives athletes the ability to experiment with high-carb strategies more confidently, while helping coaches fine-tune fueling protocols to reduce GI distress and improve workout outcomes.”

Based on over 250 highly calibrated lab tests, the feature supports the growing trend toward high-carbohydrate fueling—up to 125 grams per hour—as pioneered by elite riders like Tadej Pogačar under San Millán’s guidance.
