ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1284 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, December 24thBy Erik Kain

The big day is here at last. Merry Christmas, my dearest Wordlers! I hope you have a wonderful day of celebration, whether you’re celebrating the birth of Christ or just enjoying friends and family and presents and the season’s cheer. No matter how you celebrate the holidays, may they be warm and wonderful and joyous!

It’s not only Christmas, it’s also Wordle Wednesday which means I have a special riddle for you to solve. This is a tough one, so get your holiday thinking caps on!

Christmas Riddle

Santa stands in his workshop,

With gifts stacked to the sky.

He calls for three clever elves,

To help with his supply.

The first elf takes half the pile,

Then adds three gifts more.

The second elf takes half of what’s left,

And adds the same as before.

The third elf does the same again,

Leaving Santa with just one.

How many gifts did Santa have,

Before the elves begun?

I’ll post the answer tomorrow, but feel free to reach out to me with your solution on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook before then.

Let’s solve this Wordle!

How To Solve Today’s Wordle

The Hint: Something we all do on Christmas, but is nice to do year-round.

The Clue: This Wordle ends with a vowel.

Okay, spoilers below!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

I went with another wintery opening guess today, but SNOWY was not a great start to my Wordling this Christmas day. With 207 remaining solutions, I plugged in CRATE and slashed that down to just two. Impulsively, I guessed SPARE without even coming up with any other possible solutions. Alas, the Wordle was SHARE. Oh well!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get 0 points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot, who took just three tries today. Sigh.

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word “share” comes from the Old English “scearu”, meaning “a cutting, division, or part.” This is derived from the Proto-Germanic “skaro”, which refers to something cut or separated. The root “sker-“ in Proto-Indo-European means “to cut” or “to divide.” Over time, the meaning evolved to imply portions or allocations of something, as well as the concept of distributing or partaking in something with others.
