NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA – APRIL 06: Tim Tszyu of Australia punches Joey Spencer of the United States … More
Tim Tszyu needed a win on Saturday. The former WBO junior middleweight champion was coming off the first two losses of his career, falling to Sebastian Fundora by split decision and Bakhram Murtazaliev by TKO when he stepped into the ring against Joey Spencer.
Tszyu looked poised and controlled in the early going of the contest. Meanwhile, Spencer seemed a little out of sorts. While Spencer looked to find his groove, Tszyu took control of the fight, unloading effective and powerful combinations on his opponent, who seemed incapable of mounting an effective defense. Spencer didn’t use his footwork or head movement to avoid the blows coming his way and by the fourth round rolled around and Tszyu was landing at will, Spencer’s corner waved off the contest.
Tszyu seemed happy and relived to get the win. He also said that a fight against former WBA welterweight champion Keith Thurman, who recently knocked out Brock Jarvis in Australia was an appealing matchup for his next outing.

NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA – APRIL 06: Brandon Grach of Australia falls to the ground as Liam Talivaa of … More
The heavyweight bout between Liam Talivaa and Brandon Grach did not feel like it would go the distance as both men seemed eager to get the finish. In the end, it was the power of Talivaa that ended the fight.
Grach was a game opponent, but Talivaa hurt him early in the fifth stanza, dropping him to the mat. The two then got back to work, but Grach was soon sent back to the canvas, bringing an end to the contest
Endry Saavedra Vs. Mikkel Neilsen
NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA – APRIL 06: Endry Saavedra of Venezuela punches Mikkel Nielsen of Denmark … More
Endry Saavedra claimed the WBO International Middleweight title with a stoppage in the eighth round over Mikkel Neilsen. The fight seemed evenly matched early, with both fighters throwing effective combinations from distance. However, Saavedra slowly pulled away as the bout wore on. He was more effective and powerful with his punches, racking up damage through combinations and pressure.
Once Saavedra established control of the fight, Saavedra looked to mix up his combinations and began to attack his opponent’s body. He broke through in the eighth round, scoring two knockdowns. A third knockdown was waved off as a low blow. However, the ref stopped the bout shortly after that, seeming to hear something he did not like from Neilsen, who appeared to be doing little more than surviving at that point of the fight.
Koen Mazoudier vs. Dan Hill
NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA – APRIL 06: Koen Mazoudier of Australia punches Dan Hill of Australia during … More
Koen Mazoudier and Dan Hill put on an entertaining 10-round scrap for the Australian super welterweight title. Mazoudier entered the bout, coming off an August 2024 knockout loss to Nikita Tszyu, while Hill’s most recent bout was a decision victory over Lewis Chadwick in September 2024.
The two were very aggressive from the start of the fight, with a lot of output. They kept up that aggression throughout the bout. The fight might not have been a technical marvel, but the two gave the crowd their money’s worth.
Mazoudier was very good at distance. The problem was that he allowed Hill to close distance and work in close far too often. If Mazoudier had been better at controlling range, he might have picked up a finish, considering he scored a knockdown in the third round at range.
Hill was gritty and tough throughout the scrap, but he could not keep the fight in close enough to get the win. By the end of the bout, his face was well-damaged and swollen.
After the win, Mazoudier called for a rematch with Tszyu. Tszyu said he would accept that fight, but said he would rather not face Mazoudier again, laughing when he called his former opponent a “tough bastard.”

Eddie Hearn On Tszyu
Belfast , United Kingdom – 1 March 2025; Chairman and promoter of Matchroom Boxing Eddie Hearn at … More
“I’m a big Tim Tszyu fan. I think he’s a great fighter. Sometimes, you can believe your own hype a little bit as a fighter, and I think they felt that Tim was unbeatable,” promoter Eddie Hearn told Jai McAllister earlier this year. “I really admire that they took that fight, and they should have taken that fight (Bakhram) because it’s for a world championship. But no one really wants to fight that guy because he’s a serious dude with no value. So, if you get beat by him, you’re kind of like, but I like the fact that they did it, and I like the fact that he’s a real fighter.
“Sometimes, you can get carried away. There’s a massive difference between fighting in Australia and the Australian market and then going out on the world stage and taking on elite opposition. You saw that against Fundora, and he (Tszyu) was very unlucky in that fight with the injury and everything,” said Hearn.
“I think the unknown about Tim Tszyu is, is he really elite level,” added Hearn. “He’s a world-class fighter; there’s no doubt about it. But is he really at that level? Maybe. I think the jury is out. There’s no shame in that. Sometimes, you step up to that level, and you’re not good enough.”
