Michael Keaton and Tim Burton exhibit curator Jenny He say there’s much more to Batman’s mask in a new clip from director Tara Wood’s upcoming docuseries on Burton.
The first promo from Wood’s four-part Tim Burton Docuseries — which is still awaiting an official title — was released last week. Episode 1 of Wood’s Tim Burton Docuseries debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in June 2024.
The docuseries features several of Burton’s key collaborators over the years, including actors Keaton, Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, Christoph Walz, Christopher Walken, Mia Wasikowska and Jenna Ortega.
In addition to granting me access to the first two episodes prior to our conversation about the Tim Burton Docuseries, Wood released a first-look clip of a scene where Keaton and He discuss the meaning behind the director’s version of Batman.

Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ Examines The Loneliness Of The Character Hiding Behind A Mask
In the Tim Burton Docuseries clip, Michael Keaton and Jenny He discuss how Batman’s mask serves as a representation of the loneliness Bruce Wayne felt not being able to reveal his true identity.
“Tim Burton didn’t actually grow up reading comic books. He wasn’t this comic book nerd,” He says in the docuseries. “But what he identified with was the loneliness of having to put on a mask … of not being able to reveal your true identity.”

Keaton added, “It was never really about Batman. It was about Bruce Wayne. That was always the trick. That was the key … that, ‘Who was Bruce Wayne?’ … You know, a guy who found a way to do what he had to do because he had to do it, but at the same time he probably thought his life was really unusual. When you feel like that, you probably feel lonely.”
Episodes 1 and 2 of the Tim Burton Docuseries cover everything from Burton’s time growing up in Burbank, Calif., and his earliest art and home movie creations to his days as a student at CalArts.
In additon, the first two episodes chronicle his short films and first slate of features incuding Peewee’s Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas through 1994’s Ed Wood.
Tara Wood said Episodes 3 and 4 chronicle Burton’s films all the way through 2024’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Also featured in the docuseries are several of Burton’s closest creative collaborators throughout his career, including Rick Heinrichs, Danny Elfman, Denise Di Novi, Colleen Atwood, Allison Abbate and Derek Frey.
Wood’s four-part Tim Burton Docuseries is still awaiting a release date.
