Bring Her Back
We are close to midway through 2025, and so far we’ve had a number of horror offerings that are worth checking out. There aren’t exactly a ton with ultra-high scores, but one has just arrived that has the best scores I’ve seen so far, depending on what you’re counting as horror, that is.
The movie is A24’s Bring Her Back, currently at a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes with dozens of critic reviews in. It is from the co-directors of the also-excellent Talk To Me, Danny and Michael Philippou, who released the possession new-era classic in 2022. That scored a 94% so these two are obviously huge new horror directors to watch, as those are their first two movies.
Here’s the synopsis for Bring Her Back, short on details, but probably on purpose:
“A brother and sister uncover a terrifying ritual at the secluded home of their new foster mother.”
You can watch the trailer below ahead of its release on May 30. I am actually going to go out of my way not to watch it, as I’d like to know as little as possible heading in, but you totally can if you want.
It’s a relatively unknown cast, and the only name I even recognize is Sally Hawkins of The Shape of Water. The younger actors I do not recognize and one of the main ones, Sora Wong, doesn’t even have an IMDB picture and this is her first actual acting role. Wow.
As for Bring Her Back being the best-reviewed horror movie of 2024, well, here’s a list:
- Companion – 93%
- Final Destination: Bloodlines – 92%
- Heart Eyes – 81%
- The Monkey – 79%
- Clown in a Cornfield – 74%
- The Gorge – 63%
- Borderline – 56%
- Wolf Man – 49%
- The Woman in the Yard – 42%
- Opus – 42%
These are wide releases, mostly, and the caveat here is whether you consider the blockbuster Sinners just a horror movie or something more transcendent. I know it’s about vampires and there’s plenty of blood but I don’t know, putting it (and its 97%) in this list doesn’t feel quite right. But hey, even if so, Bring Her Back would be second place at the moment.
One very surprising bit of recent horror news is just how well Final Destination: Bloodlines has scored among both critics (92%) and audiences (90%), higher than any other film in the series that is now six movies long. You do not often see that, and this is certainly now on my list to watch. But Bring Her Back will be here soon enough.
