Indian film Jaat has had a decent box office run in its first week since it released in theatres on April 10. The film featuring Sunny Deol and Randeep Hooda in lead roles, grossed slightly less than $10 million in a week at the global ticket windows and managed to cross that mark within ten days at the box office.
Jaat Scores $10.5 million at global box office in 10 days

Jaat released in theatres on the festive occasion of Baisakhi, a harvest festival celebrated in and around the Indian state of Punjab. Incidentally, Deol is a huge star in the region, and so is the film’s antagonist Randeep Hooda.

Jaat made an opening collection of nearly $1.5 million worldwide. In the Indian markets, the film opened with $1.3 million on Thursday, April 10. The film’s second day at the ticket windows was a working one – Friday – and the collections predictably dipped. Jaat made a two-day total of $2.1 million in India and $2.6 million worldwide.
On Saturday, the collections of Jaat rose and it made more than its opening figure. The film’s three-day total stood at $3.7 million in India and $4 million at the global box office. After Sunday, the film’s fourth day at the ticket windows, Jaat made a total collection of $6.5 million worldwide and $5.5 million in India.
The collections for the film slowed down over the weekdays that followed its first-extended weekend. By the end of its seven days, Jaat made $9.9 million worldwide and it closed its first (extended) week at the box office with a score of $10.5 million, producers Mythri Movie Makers confirm.

Directed by Gopichand Malineni, Jaat faced stiff competition from a Tamil film that released on the same day. Featuring Ajith Kumar in the lead role, Good Bad Ugly opened to a score of $3.5 million in India and $5.8 million at the global box office. In a week since their releases, Good Bad Ugly has scored more than double the collections of Jaat. The Tamil film has closed its first extended week at a score of $23 million. Both Jaat and Good Bad Ugly have been produced by Mythri Movie Makers.
Akshay Kumar’s Kesari Chapter 2 hit theatres on April 18, offering further competition for Jaat. Kumar’s film has opened to wide critical appreciation.

Written and directed by Malineni who makes his Bollywood debut with the film, Jaat, revolves around a Sri Lankan immigrant (Hooda as the antagonist) in India and his encounter with a strong, brave and eccentric man (Deol as the titular ‘Jaat’). We also get to see corrupt politicians, immoral police officers and ruthless women that help in forming the awe-inspiring world of populist cinema in Jaat.
Jaat faced backlash for a scene that features Hooda and is set inside a church. Just days after the release, producers of the film issued an apology for the scene and the controversial scene was removed. In the apology note shared on social media, the producers said that the intention was never to ‘hurt any religious sentiments’, adding that they deeply regret and apologize to ‘everyone whose beliefs have been hurt’.
Meanwhile, a sequel to Jaat has already been greenlit. In a social media post earlier this week, Mythri Movie Makers confirmed Sunny Deol will feature in Jaat 2 that is set to be directed by Gopichand Malineni.
