Strava’s acquisition of cycling app The Breakaway brings the platform full circle, in a nod to the sport where it all began

Strava has acquired the core assets of The Breakaway, a cycling training app, marking its second acquisition in recent weeks as the platform for active people expands its ecosystem. The deal follows last month’s purchase of Runna, a running-focused training app and comes on the heels of a new fundraising round that values Strava at $2.2 billion, including debt, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

The Breakaway offers personalized cycling plans, ride analysis and achievement tracking. According to the companies, Breakaway users who connect to Strava upload twice as many activities as the average Strava cyclist.

“Jordan Kobert, Kyle Yugawa and team have built a brilliant app for cyclists who want to improve and achieve their cycling targets, making it a perfect fit for the Strava subscription, which helps users accomplish their goals,” Strava CEO Michael Martin said. “When Strava was founded more than 16 years ago, it was created initially for cyclists—these users remain important members of our global community, and we are excited to enhance their experience through this acquisition.”

Acquisition aside, Strava, which boasts over 150 million athletes in more than 185 countries, has been doubling down on its role as a leading community-powered fitness platform with a series of new features to enhance both route discovery and competitive integrity.

For subscribers, an upgraded Routes experience now offers AI-powered suggestions, allowing users to generate community-backed routes from their location or custom starting point. Tappable Points of Interest, coming in June, will let users explore cafés, restrooms and viewpoints with a tap, instantly generating routes that include them. In July, point-to-point routing will debut on mobile, allowing athletes to drop a pin and get an activity-specific route in seconds.

On the performance side, Strava is adding more Live Segments, allowing subscribers to discover and compete with new features, such as additional screens with comparison metrics. It’s also advancing the applications of its machine learning model to reprocess the top ten spots on the ride-and-run leaderboards as part of its efforts to ensure fairness.
