Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon has now spent 500 weeks on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart, … [+]
Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon has ranked among the bestselling albums of all time essentially since its release. In the decades since the British rock outfit dropped the masterpiece, it has maintained its status as a must-have for any serious record collector, as well as for fans of the band, and even just casual observers.
Americans continue to buy The Dark Side of the Moon to this day in large numbers. Thousands of people keep the project going each and every frame, and this week is a special one for the blockbuster.
The Dark Side of the Moon has now lived on the Top Album Sales chart for 500 weeks. It is one of the only releases in history to hit that incredible landmark on Billboard’s ranking of the bestselling full-lengths and EPs in the U.S.
Pink Floyd’s classic isn’t barely hanging on on the 50-spot tally. The title actually manages to climb 16 spaces to No. 30 on the current edition of the Top Album Sales chart.
In the past tracking week, The Dark Side of the Moon sold a little less than 2,700 copies, according to Luminate. Those are pure purchases, too, and not equivalent units, which are used on rankings like the Billboard 200. Sales of The Dark Side of the Moon increased by 8.5% from one week to another. In its four hundred ninety-ninth turn on the Top Album Sales list, as it barely hung on, it sold a little less than 2,500 copies.
The Dark Side of the Moon sold well enough in America last frame to not only rise on the Top Album Sales chart, but reappear on another list that’s powered entirely by purchases. Pink Floyd returns to the Vinyl Albums list at No. 14 with the historic smash success.
Despite its longevity, The Dark Side of the Moon has never conquered the Top Album Sales chart. The list was introduced years after the project was shared with the world and became a bestseller, so, like many others that suffer from such timing, it hasn’t had a chance to reach the highest position, which many fans might assume it already has. Instead, Pink Floyd’s blockbuster has risen as high as No. 7, though it has previously reached No. 2 on the Vinyl Albums list.
Amazingly, The Dark Side of the Moon is not the only title on the Top Album Sales chart to rack up 500 stays. Pink Floyd’s release is actually the third-longest-running win at the moment. It comes in behind Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers, which will reach 700 turns next week.
Metallica’s self-titled effort owns the record for the most weeks spent on the Top Album Sales chart among those titles that can be found on the list at present. As the hard rock legends bring the early offering back, it makes it to 729 frames spent somewhere on the roster.
