What to watch this weekend.
It’s the first weekend of May and it appears that this month is all about antiheroes. And zombies. Lots of new TV shows and movies are out, and even though the weather is getting warmer and it’s harder to want to be indoors, when you’re done with all that this guide should help you find something fun to watch when you finally kick back and relax this weekend.
As always, I’ve scoured the internet and all the many streaming services we all subscribe to these days to find the very best new content for your viewing pleasure. I also list the shows I’m following each week, some of which I’m also reviewing episodically.
A couple older shows I’ve been watching lately, before we get to the new stuff:
Southland, an American police procedural set in L.A. that follows patrol cops and police detectives as they deal with the day-to-day grind of police work. Each episode tackles different cases, and these are rarely drawn out beyond one episode, which makes for nice contained viewing. It’s my guilty pleasure show these days, and I’ve almost burned through all five seasons. Just a few episodes left.
The Wire is a masterpiece and if you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend you do. Each season focuses on a different institution in Baltimore, Maryland, following the police, detectives, lawyers, politicians and criminals, as well as normal citizens, in sprawling stories about humanity, corruption, crime and family. What makes this show great is both its phenomenal, gritty writing and the excellent cast. It’s unlike anything else I’ve ever seen.
If you have any tips or I missed something, shoot me a message on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. You can check out last weekend’s streaming guide right here.
What’s New & Notable This Weekend
The Walking Dead: Dead City — Season 2 (AMC+)
The Walking Dead: Dead City is one of the many spinoffs from the main show that continue to drag this story of the apocalypse on ad infinitum. I thought the first season was pretty decent, mainly because Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) put in a great performance. The second season is reviewing pretty well, but I’ve read at least one review that says it’s quite a slog. I’ve been reviewing Walking Dead shows for as long as I can remember, and I have to admit I’m not particularly excited for this one. Hopefully it’s good.
Star Wars: Tales From The Underworld (Disney+)
The Tales animated series picks back up with a look at the seedy underbelly of Star Wars, which is fitting given that Andor is also currently airing. This looks quite good, actually, and drops on May 4th, which is Star Wars Day (because May the 4th Be With You). If you’re into animated Star Wars this should be a fun new release, following the exploits of Cad Bane and Ventress in some all-new adventures.
The Four Seasons (Netflix)
Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Colman Domingo (previously of Fear The Walking Dead) all star in this adaptation of Alan Alda’s 1981 film about three couples who go on vacation together, only to learn that one of these couples is splitting up. It’s getting pretty good reviews, though I read one that says Tina Fey stepping outside of her normal comedic comfort zone doesn’t work quite as well as one would hope.
Miss Austen (PBS)
The story of Jane Austen’s sister, Cassandra, explores why she destroyed her sister’s letters. The PBS drama is based on Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel and for Austen fans should be a fascinating literary drama about a piece of history I knew nothing about.
Drop (VOD)
I haven’t seen Drop yet, but I’ve had something of a Hollywood crush on Meghann Fahy since her riveting performance in The White Lotus Season 2. This is also “from the producers of A Quiet Place” which I really loved. The thriller is about a widowed mother who starts receiving threatening messages during her first date in years. Apparently the trailer gives away too much so if you’re thinking of watching the movie, maybe skip watching that.
Train To Busan (Netflix)
I wrote about this separately because it is genuinely such a great zombie movie that it deserved its very own post. Train To Busan is one of my top 5 zombie movies of all time, easily, and just a genuinely great film regardless of genre. The South Koreans do the best zombies and this is no exception. It’s just landed on Netflix and I recommend you go into it without a plot summary or watching the trailer. I know zombies, folks, and this is peak zombies.
Thunderbolts (In Theaters)
Thunderbolts follows the exploits of Marvel’s antiheroes, including Florence Pugh’s Black Widow / Yelena Belova, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell’s U.S. Agent and more. It’s also the best-reviewed Marvel film in years. I’m going to see it today and will have a review out this weekend. It’s definitely the first Marvel film (other than Deadpool and Wolverine) that I’ve been excited about in a long, long time.
What I’m Watching Weekly
A lot of great shows are airing still, though a couple of the weekly inclusions on this list—Dope Thief and Dark Winds—came to an end last week. Here’s what I’m following each week.
Andor (Disney+)
Season 2 of Andor continues to be top-tier television, with some incredibly tense moments and a really great spy story that’s just head and shoulders above all other recent Star Wars projects. This is not “Star Wars for kids” because despite what some detractors say, Star Wars isn’t *just* for kids. If you aren’t watching Andor yet, stop what you’re doing and go watch.
You can read my spoiler-free Season 2 review here.
The Last Of Us (HBO / Max)
Sunday evenings are now devoted to The Last Of Us on HBO, which has been a bit of a mixed bag so far this season. I’ve now seen through Episode 6, and I think the next three episodes are all quite good, so that’s positive news! The post-apocalyptic series is based on the video games of the same name from Naughty Dog. You can read my review of Episode 3 right here.
The Studio (Apple TV)
I’ve enjoyed every episode of Seth Rogen’s new Apple TV show The Studio a ton, but the most recent is a great parody of Hollywood’s bungling attempts to make movies more diverse. It’s also a classic story of how good intentions pave the road to hell. I highly recommend this series. You can read my review of the most recent episode, ‘Casting’ right here.
Black Snow (AMC+)
Travis Fimmel plays detective James Cormack in this Australian cold cases murder mystery series. Season 2 follows the case of Zoe (Jana McKinnon) who disappeared in 2003. So far, Season 2 is every bit as good as the first. Fimmel is excellent here as the eccentric detective, and the setting is incredibly unique. I really need to get to Australia one of these days.
Your Friends & Neighbors (Apple TV)
I’m really enjoying this dark comedy on Apple TV. For one thing, Jon Hamm is excellent as hedge fund manager Andrew “Coop” Cooper, who loses his wife and his job and turns to petty burglary to make a living, robbing his wealthy friends and neighbors right under their noses. The consequences of his actions are sure to be grim, but so far he’s been getting away by the skin of his teeth.
MobLand (Paramount+)
MobLand is a big hit on Paramount+ and for good reason. The series is about rival London gangs and follows fixer Harry (Tom Hardy) as he tries to navigate the criminal underworld for his boss, Conrad Harrigan (Pierce Brosnan). A great cast helps elevate the show, with Helen Mirren, Paddy Considine and more putting in terrific performances.
The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu)
Just a couple episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale remain, and I’m still not watching. I’m curious how you all feel about the final season. My big stumbling block here is that I just burnt out after Season 4, so I’m behind an entire season and I’m not sure I can force myself to watch Season 5 anytime soon.
Other shows that I’m not following or caught up on but keep meaning to watch:
- Law & Order Organized Crime on Peacock
- Godfather Of Harlem on MGM+
- The Righteous Gemstones on HBO
- Doctor Who on Disney+
