The Evolve Mvmt device measures shock absorption and step quality, claiming to be the first wearable in the world to do so

After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Australia-based fit tech company Evolve Mvmt launched a new wearable device, tailored specifically to runners.

The Evolve Mvmt device measures two uncommon metrics: shock absorption and running efficiency, through step quality.

Unlike typical wearables that usually go on the wrist, Evolve Mvmt is worn on the ankle and connects via Bluetooth to a smartphone, tablet, or smartwatch to provide visual feedback about each leg (if one device is worn per leg) to guide running in the moment.

In the first four minutes of its Kickstarter campaign, the Evolve Mvmt device was fully funded, and it surpassed 350% of its original goal as of Tuesday afternoon. The mission behind the device is to help prevent injuries in running, which is one of the most injury-prone sports due to its high impact on the body.

“As a sports physician, I know how relevant shock absorption is. Evolve Mvmt will be invaluable, from injured patients to recreational runners and professional athletes,” said Dr. Bob Sallis, a medical consultant for the NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers and MLS’ LA Football Club.

During the run, the wearable vibrates and emits light alerts to help correct form. After your run, you’ll receive a step score from one to 10 to gauge form, efficiency and progress. The companion app can also store data for post-run feedback on:

Injury risk based on how your body handles impact

Running efficiency through cadence, stride quality and speed optimization

Fatigue detection during your workout

Footwear effectiveness through comparing shoes with measurable data

Terrain analysis to see how different surfaces affect performance

The device is now available on Kickstarter at a discount for $199, 60% off the future retail price of $499.
