The latest chapter in the Jimmy Butler saga for the Miami Heat has arrived 24 hours after another report suggested their superstar wants out immediately.

With the NBA now fully believing Butler and Miami are on the fast-track to a divorce by the February 6th trade deadline, Heat executive Pat Riley wrote a statement released through the organization on Thursday.

“We usually don’t comment on rumors, but all of this speculation has become a distraction to the team and is not fair to the players and coaches,” Riley said. “Therefore, we will make it clear — we are not trading Jimmy Butler.”

At this point, it’s fair to wonder what exactly is going on behind the scenes between the Heat and Butler. From the outside looking in, the optics aren’t great with the constant back-and-forth suggesting the opposite is occurring.

Butler was seeking a new long-term extension from Miami in the summer, which never came to pass. Now, with the deal looking very unlikely at all to come from the Heat, Butler appears to be playing his cards of leverage.

Miami knows the market for Butler won’t change between now and the offseason, which projects only one team to have the necessary cap space to sign Butler outright: the Brooklyn Nets. With Brooklyn in a full-scale rebuild, Butler’s options to leave Miami are before the trade deadline or in the summer via sign-and-trade.

The 35-year-old star wing knows this next contract will likely be his last, in terms of earning maximum value through his final prime years. Is Miami willing to pay up? That’s the looming question that will permeate over this situation until a resolution is reached.

As ESPN originally reported earlier this month, Butler has a list of four teams he is open to be traded to: Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and Phoenix Suns. And recently, Golden State and Phoenix appear to be the most realistic options for Butler to secure his lucrative new multi-year deal.

So, what’s next between Butler and the Heat? With the February 6th NBA trade deadline still six weeks away, this will be a constant story going back-and-forth until a resolution is eventually reached one way or the other.

With a headstrong star playing his leverage, as are the Heat ready at every turn for what comes next in this melodrama, go ahead and buckle up for the next steps to play out in real time.

Get ready, because the Butler-Heat dynamic doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon.
