Premier League giant Liverpool has made its stance clear on potentially selling Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid in the January transfer window according to MARCA, which cited anonymous sources.

The 26-year-old has been on his boyhood club’s books for more than two decades.

Yet with a contract set to expire on June 30, 2025, it now appears increasingly likely that Alexander-Arnold will cut ties with the English top flight leaders and join Real Madrid.

The right back has been continually linked with Los Blancos since reports started to emerge on the topic last year.

Yet rather than wait until next summer to sign him for nothing, it has emerged that President Florentino Perez is attempting to push Liverpool into selling the England international in the January transfer window for a cut fee.

A season-ending injury to Dani Carvajal suffered in October has accelerated matters, with head coach Carlo Ancelotti only able to call on an aging Lucas Vazquez at right back who isn’t a natural in the position.

This week, The Times in the UK – citing anonymous sources – reported that Madrid lodged a cheeky and understandably rejected bid of $28 million (£20 million) for ‘TAA’.

MARCA, which has also reported that the first contacts have been made between the involved parties of the potential deal, explains that Liverpool’s directors have already sent a message to their Madrid counterparts regarding the move.

“We don’t want to sell our player now,” they allegedly said about an early sale, and the reasoning for this isn’t hard to fathom.

While some probably can’t see the logic in not accepting at least a little money for a player that could and probably will walk for nothing in under six months’ time, Liverpool doesn’t want to let go of a figure that is widely considered to be one of the best in the world in his position alongside Dani Carvajal when it has ambitions to win the Premier League and Champions League this term.

Arne Slot’s side currently leads the English domestic championship by six points and has a game in hand over second-place Arsenal.

On the continent, Liverpool is similarly first in the UCL’s initial new league phase and boasts a three-point advantage at FC Barcelona’s expense.

To get his man then, it looks like Perez will have to play the waiting game as he did with Kylian Mbappe, and the same logic could also apply to soon-to-be free agent Alphonso Davies.
