FC Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has given his ‘OK’ to a first team player being sold to a Premier League club according to El Nacional, which cited anonymous sources.
Danish center back Andreas Christensen is way down the pecking order in Montjuic at the moment, and is once again sidelined with a muscle niggle despite recently recovering from an Achilles tendon knock which kept him out for almost five months.
Pau Cubarsi and either Inigo Martinez or Ronald Araujo is the German manager’s preferred partnership on the back line. Eric Garcia has stepped up to the challenge too when asked of him as Flick rotates, and even scored important goals against Valencia and Sevilla in the cup and league.
Though Barca recently returned to the 1:1 rule under Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits, it still badly needs sales ahead of next term to balance the books and make signings of its own.
The likes of Eric, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres have been frequently linked to exits from the club, but so too has Christensen in recent days.
Because of him landing from Chelsea on a free transfer in 2022, selling Christensen presents pure profit for the Catalans.
El Nacional explains that one of Chelsea’s bitterest of rivals in Tottenham Hotspur has recently enquired about the 28-year-old, who considering his age should be at the peak of his career where it not for so many injuries.
The Catalan newspaper adds that Flick has already told the board he won’t step in the way of Christensen being moved on, at the same time Spurs is willing to pay a much-welcomed $15.7 million (€15 million) to have him in its squad for the 2025/2026 season.
A sale could reportedly be closed in “the coming days”, though Christensen obviously wouldn’t be able to switch allegiances until the summer when the transfer window opens again.
With La Liga and Champions League-winning experience, coupled with that he earned playing in the Premier League for Chelsea, Christensen is an attractive potential acquisition for top European clubs who has plenty of football ahead of him.
Even if the Spurs deal doesn’t go ahead, he should have no end of suitors elsewhere.
