FC Barcelona has already closed a contract agreement with its veteran striker Robert Lewandowski according to Mundo Deportivo, which cited anonymous sources.
The Pole joined the Catalans in the summer of 2022, as President Joan Laporta pulled his famous ‘economic levers’ to buy him from Bayern Munich while also capturing Jules Kounde and Raphinha with the money raised from selling percentages of future television rights revenue.
Fast forward almost three years later, and all three men still play a pivotal role under Xavi Hernadez’s successor Hansi Flick in a team that is challenging title race leader and reigning champion Real Madrid for the La Liga crown.
Despite sometimes looking every bit of his 36 years of age, ‘Lewa’ is Spain’s top scorer and also second in the Champions League marksman rankings.
When he switched from Bayern, Lewandowski agreed a four-season deal though the last of those terms was dependent on playing a certain number of games in 2024/2025 which would automatically trigger a clause.
Said clause will be activated if the number 9 features in next Monday’s home meeting with Rayo Vallecano in Montjuic. Yet Mundo Deportivo cites anonymous sources which say that the club and its players already have an agreement closed for Lewandowski to continue in Blaugrana for one more campaign.
The paper also explains that there is no arrangement in place which could see Lewandowski taking another optional year beyond the next one, though the player and his family have reportedly taken the decision to settle in Barcelona once he retires because of his wife setting up businesses in the city.
Lewandowski has previously rejected “dizzying offers” from Saudi Arabia, which have been taken up by aging greats of his stature, to continue at Barca – which now needs to start looking at a long-term heir to fill his front line boots.
That was meant to be Brazilian teenager Vitor Roque, who was brought to Catalonia at the turn of 2024 yet failed to impress to the extent that he was sent out on a two-season loan to Real Betis.
Pau Victor is waiting in the wings and already on the books, while the hat trick hero of Barca’s 5-0 Copa del Rey quarterfinals victory over Valencia, Ferran Torres, also fancies himself as a frontman.
