Disturbed’s “The Sound of Silence” has now spent 100 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Digital … [+]
By the time they released their cover of “The Sound of Silence” nearly a decade ago, Disturbed had already proved themselves to be one of the biggest names in hard rock. The band’s 2015 take on the Simon & Garfunkel classic brought them to new heights, and in the years since, it’s remained a favorite among their massive fanbase and, seemingly, even well beyond those borders.
“The Sound of Silence” is still a huge hit to this day, which is extremely rare for any composition that comes from the harder side of rock music. The single is living inside the upper reaches of a number of Billboard charts to this day, and this week has turned out to be especially important for the tune.
Disturbed’s smash is steady atop the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales chart at the moment, standing out as the bestselling track in that genre. “The Sound of Silence” has now led the charge on the purchase-focused tally for 100 weeks, making it one of a very, very small number of musical releases of any kind to hit that mark on any of Billboard’s lists.
“The Sound of Silence” has spent 469 weeks somewhere on the Hard Rock Digital Song Sales ranking. A little less than one-quarter of those frames have been at No. 1, and many of the rest have been inside the top 10, considering the tally only features 10 spaces these days.
As “The Sound of Silence” rules the hard rock tally, the same single almost conquers another, very different ranking. Disturbed’s tune–actually, the Cyril remix–lifts one space to settle at No. 2 on the Dance/Electronic Digital Song Sales chart. The reworking has already led that list, which focuses only on the bestselling dance and electronic cuts in the nation, and it may soon recapture the throne.
“The Sound of Silence” is selling so well, it’s also present inside the top 10 on two other charts that focus only on purchases of individual tracks. Disturbed’s most successful release is a non-mover at No. 5 on the Rock Digital Song Sales list, and one slot lower on the Alternative Digital Song Sales ranking. It has topped both rosters in the past.
Disturbed landed their biggest hit ever when they dropped “The Sound of Silence” in 2015. The tune climbed to No. 42 on the Hot 100 at the time, marking a new high on the list of the most-consumed songs in the country. It still stands as their top placement, even almost a decade later, and they may never beat that position.
