Key Facts

The recall targets whole fresh cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc. distributed between April 29 and May 19 to stores and businesses like Target, which issued its recall of the cucumbers on May 19.

The outbreak has infected 45 people and hospitalized 16 across 18 states, according to the CDC, which noted the recalled cucumbers are not organic.

The Food and Drug Administration said the cucumbers “may have been sold individually or in smaller packages, with or without a label that may not bear the same brand, product name, or best by date.”

What States Have Been Impacted By The Cucumber Recall?

Cases linked to the recall have been identified in California, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Kentucky, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, according to the FDA. States with the highest number of cases are Georgia and Florida, the latter of which is the headquarters of Bedner Growers.

What Are Salmonella Symptoms?

Symptoms of salmonella include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps, which usually begin six hours to six days after swallowing the bacteria. Most people recover within four to seven days without treatment, though children younger than five or adults 65 years and older may experience more severe symptoms that require treatment or hospitalization, according to the CDC.

Key Background

The salmonella outbreak began early this month, initially infecting 26 people and hospitalizing nine. The CDC and FDA are still investigating the outbreak, but have said the impacted cucumbers should not be on sale as of Friday. Last year, the CDC and FDA identified salmonella outbreaks linked to cucumbers, eggs and charcuterie meats.
