Wearable Biosensors Make Their Way Into Hot Yoga Studios

Sweat-analysis company Nix is pushing its hydration tech beyond athletes and into heated fitness

It takes a special kind of yogi to willingly step into a room heated to about 100 degrees with humidity pushing 40%. It’s a great workout for sure, but it’s also one that’s no match for a single water bottle.

What most practitioners don’t realize is just how much they’re actually losing in that heat (or how wildly it varies from person to person).

That’s about to change for Modo Yoga members. The international hot yoga franchise has partnered with hydration monitoring company Nix Biosensors, giving its members access to a wearable that tracks individual fluid and electrolyte losses and offers personalized hydration guidance.

Members will wear the hydration biosensor on the upper arm and pair it with a mobile app, which provides all the insights they need to improve endurance and recovery, reduce symptoms like dizziness, fatigue and cramping and build long-term awareness of their individual hydration needs.

The timing comes as Modo launches its own branded electrolyte product: The Modo Yoga Hydration Multiplier, which is formulated specifically for hot yoga and is sugar-free, non-GMO, vegan and free from artificial colors and fillers.

The hot yoga brand operates studios in the U.S. and France, along with a particularly deep footprint throughout Canada.

“Hydration has always been a cornerstone of safe and effective hot yoga practice,” Modo Yoga CEO Emily Drouillard said. “But until now, it’s been largely guesswork. By partnering with Nix, we’re giving our members the ability to understand what their bodies uniquely need during practice and pair that knowledge with our new electrolyte blend designed specifically for hot yoga practitioners. This is a completely new level of self-awareness and self-care.”

It’s a first for Nix, too, which has historically focused on athletes in endurance sports and team sports.

“The recent launch of our new pre-hydration and recovery calculators based on personal data allows Nix and Modo to join forces on the unique needs of hot yoga practitioners,” Nix Biosensors founder and CEO Meridith Cass said. “We’re thrilled to partner with Modo to bring this innovation to the broader fitness community for the first time.”
