Who is Roman Novak? Why Was Crypto Millionaire and Wife Murdered in Desert?

The brutal killing of Roman Novak, a Russian crypto millionaire, and his wife, Anna, has shocked both the crypto and international business communities. Their dismembered bodies were discovered in the desert near Hatta, southeast of Dubai, after they vanished following a supposed meeting with investors.

The crypto story of Roman Novak is one of wealth, deception, and revenge, a chilling reminder of how greed and betrayal can turn fatal in the world of digital fortunes.

Who Was Roman Novak? The Rise and Fall of a Crypto Tycoon.

Roman Novak was a Russian entrepreneur and crypto investor who built his reputation through ambitious crypto ventures. Presenting himself as a tech visionary with alleged ties to Telegram founder Pavel Durov, Novak founded Fintopio, a platform that claimed to revolutionize cross-border cryptocurrency transfers.

His project attracted investors from Russia, China, and the Middle East, raising hundreds of millions in funding.

However, behind the polished image and luxury lifestyle lay a darker truth. Novak had a criminal record. In 2020, he was convicted in St. Petersburg for large-scale fraud and sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding investors of millions of dollars.

Released early in 2023, he moved to Dubai, where he resumed his crypto activities. Reports suggest he raised nearly $500M through Fintopio before accusations of another massive scam surfaced. Despite his wealth, Novak’s reputation as a manipulative operator followed him, earning him powerful enemies within the global crypto scene.

The Murder: Desert Trap, Ransom Demand, and Brutal Execution

On October 2, 2025, Roman and his wife, Anna Novak, traveled to Hatta, near the UAE-Omani border, reportedly to meet new “investors”. Their driver dropped them off at a car park near a lake, where the couple switched cars and vanished.

Investigators later discovered that the meeting was a trap. They had been lured to a rented villa under the guise of investment talks, where they were kidnapped, tortured, and held for ransom.

The abductors demanded access to Roman’s crypto wallets, allegedly tied to funds stolen from previous investors. However, the wallets were empty. When Roman failed to deliver, the kidnappers murdered and dismembered both victims.

Their remains were found the next day, October 3, buried in the desert near Fujairah. Traces of Anna’s blood were discovered at the villa and in a rental car, alongside knives used in the crime. Surveillance and phone data revealed that the killers attempted to mislead authorities by leaving the victims’ phones active across Oman and South Africa. Still, the UAE and Russian investigations quickly uncovered the deception.

Seven suspects have since been detained. Among them are Konstantin Shakht (53), a former homicide investigator turned drug smuggler, and Yuri Sharypov (46) and Vladimir Dalekin (45), both veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Authorities believe they were among the “investors” who organized the abduction to recover stolen funds. Five additional young Russians reportedly assisted with logistics, unaware of the murder plot.

According to Russian investigators, “the killers had accomplices who rented cars and premises where the victims were held. After the murder, they disposed of the knives and personal belongings in different Emirates”.

Why Was Roman Novak Targeted?

The motive appears to be rooted in revenge and financial gain. Novak’s reputation as a fraudster made him a target for those he allegedly deceived. Several suspects had lost substantial sums in his ventures, including businessmen from China and the Middle East, who believed they were financing legitimate crypto operations. When Novak refused (or was unable) to transfer the demanded funds, the meeting turned deadly.

Reports from Russian outlet Fontanka indicate Novak messaged a contact saying he was “stuck in the mountains near the Oman border” and needed $200.000 just before being killed. The tragic irony: despite being labeled a “crypto millionaire”, Novak’s wallets were likely drained, leaving nothing to ransom.

Their death has left two children orphaned, now under the care of relatives. The case continues to unfold as Russian and UAE authorities work together to trace financial flows linked to Novak’s empire and uncover whether others ordered the hit.
