John Capodice, who racked up over 150 credits as an actor through the course of his career, died Monday, December. He was 83. The cause of death was not announced.

Born December 25, 1941 in Chicago, John Capodice began his film and television career in the late 1970s. His first TV role was in six episodes of the daytime drama Ryan’s Hope in 1978. From there he began his lengthy run guest-starring on television including episodes of Spenser: For Hire, The Equalizer, The Ellen Burstyn Show, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Kate & Allie, Moonlighting, and Murphy Brown in the 1980s.

Capodice’s niche as an actor fell into three types: menacing mobsters, gruff cops, or scruffy working-class types.

There was no shortage of other guest spots for Capodice in the 1990s, and beyond, including Knots Landing, Hunter, Law & Order, Seinfeld, Melrose Place, NYPD Blue, Dream On, Boy Meets World, Murder, She Wrote, Will & Grace, and six episodes of General Hospital. His later television appearances included The West Wing, Six Feet Under, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Monk and, most recently, Conversation with Mobster in 2024.

Capodice’s film credits included roles in Wall Street, The Doors, Honeymoon in Vegas, Speed, Ace Venture: Pet Detective, and Independence Day. He also worked in the theatre, appearing mainly in Off-Broadway productions.

Capodice is survived by his wife Jane, daughters Tessa De Pierro and Cassandra Hansen, and four grandchildren: David, Jake, Frankie and Giuliana.
