The latest science-backed experience from Equinox Hotels and sleep expert Dr. Matthew Walker promises next-level recovery — we checked in to see if it delivers

Equinox Hotels, the hospitality extension of the global luxury fitness brand, opened Equinox Hotel New York in 2019 with a bold premise: to reimagine high-performance living through rest, recovery and intentional design. Located in Manhattan’s Hudson Yards, the property blends sleek modern design with immersive wellness across 212 rooms and suites, The Spa by Equinox Hotels, Electric Lemon restaurant and terrace and direct access to Equinox Hudson Yards, a 60,000-square-foot flagship fitness club featuring saltwater pools, outdoor barrel saunas, personal training and an extensive group fitness program. This summer, Equinox Hotels launched its most ambitious innovation yet: The Sleep Lab by Equinox Hotels, a first-of-its-kind, research-backed sleep optimization experience developed in collaboration with expert Dr. Matthew Walker. Designed to enhance rest and recovery, it merges adaptive technology, neuroscience-based rituals and wellness-forward amenities to align with the body’s circadian rhythm. Athletech News checked in to see how the concept delivers on its promise to revolutionize sleep.

First Impressions: A Wellness-First Arrival

From the moment I stepped into the property, the Equinox brand’s philosophy of holistic high-performance wellness was evident. The concierge area features an interactive wall showcasing the day’s class schedule at Equinox Hudson Yards, with offerings ranging from swimming classes to yoga. The space feels more like a private wellness club than a traditional hotel. The entrance is understated and elegant and the check-in area is discreet, tucked just off the main lobby to create a more intimate, seamless arrival experience. Despite the scale of the property, with over 200 rooms and suites, there’s a sense of calm and intentionality throughout.

Immersive Recovery: The Spa Experience

My Sleep Lab experience began with a visit to The Spa by Equinox Hotels, perched above the skyline with calming views of the Hudson River. The design is serene, with every detail thoughtfully chosen, from the healthy snacks served to the luxurious shampoos offered in the showers. My first treatment was the Sleep IV Drip, a 45-minute infusion of magnesium and B vitamins, administered in a quiet, curtained alcove. Within hours I felt calmer and even noticed more restorative sleep over the following days, powering my improved sleep hygiene. Next was the CBD Relief Massage, a deep tissue massage using a CBD healing balm to enhance recovery and support mobility. My therapist combined mobility techniques with alignment-focused work and over the next few days I noticed reduced muscle pain and improved flexibility. My final treatment, the MLX i3Dome infrared sauna, was both intense and detoxifying. Unlike a typical sauna experience, this fully encapsulated dome creates a personalized heat chamber while red light therapy targets the face. Staying in for the full 30 minutes required stamina, but I emerged feeling lighter and relaxed. I was offered LMNT electrolytes for hydration before returning to my room for the evening phase of The Sleep Lab protocol.

Night Mode: Inside The Sleep Lab Experience

The Sleep Lab was created with input from sleep psychologists, and is dark, quiet and cool by design. The centerpiece is the Eight Sleep Pod 5 mattress cover, which uses biometric data to continuously regulate temperature throughout the night with dual-zone control. High-performance bedding, blackout blinds and soundproofing create the ideal sleep chamber. Thirty minutes before bedtime, the room begins to transform. The lights dim automatically, blackout curtains descend and the room’s ambient temperature drops. I sipped on a Sleeptime Superlatte, a warm, subtly sweet blend of chicory, carob, vanilla bean, sleep herbs, adaptogens and oat milk, then activated the PM Soundscape on the in-room television. Developed using music psychology and neuroscience, this guided audio ritual is designed to down-regulate the nervous system and prepare the body for deep rest. Even the smoke detectors were discreet: General Manager Jeff Rednour told me they received special permission to install models without intrusive lights. The wellness minibar was stocked with magnesium patches, supplements, blackout eye masks and Loop earplugs. Though the room was insulated, I did hear some hallway noise, making the earplugs a welcome addition.

Wake-Up Protocol: The AM Ritual

In the morning, the AM Ritual began automatically with a gradual increase in temperature and light, mimicking a sunrise. A curated Morning video guided me through light movement designed to energize the body. The room includes a built-in steam shower with contrast therapy functionality. I activated a setting that alternated 40 seconds of ice-cold water, which I could contrast with steam, creating a thermal reset that left me invigorated and fully awake. I then reviewed my Sleep Assessment from the bedside device, which displayed detailed sleep stage data and quality metrics.

Final Impressions: A Performance-Driven Retreat

Before checking out, I headed to Equinox Hudson Yards for a barre class taught by Lucas Blankenhorn. The class was engaging and entertaining, a perfect end to my stay. The hotel reserves a portion of class spots exclusively for guests, which made it easy to join despite the club’s popularity.

The Sleep Lab by Equinox Hotels is more than a luxury hotel stay: it’s a performance-focused experience engineered to support peak performance through optimized recovery. Every element, from the spa’s science-backed menu to the room’s sensory automation, has been thoughtfully curated for ideal sleep. Whether you’re an athlete, frequent traveler, or just chasing better rest, the Sleep Lab may be just what the doctor ordered.
