Johnny Flynn is joining the cast of HBO’s Harry Potter series as Lucius Malfoy along with eight others. What else has Flynn appeared in?
Adapted from the Harry Potter book series by author J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter, of course, originated on screen and played out over eight films, beginning with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001 with Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint and Emma Watson starring as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
Tom Felton played the trio’s adversary, Draco Malfoy, while Jason Isaacs (who went on to star in The White Lotus Season 3) starred as his father, Lucius Malfoy.
Warner Bros. Discovery announced on Monday that nine new cast members for its upcoming HBO Original Harry Potter series have been cast, including Flynn as Lucius Malfoy and relative newcomer Lox Pratt as Draco.
Flynn and Pratt will be joining the other recently announced cast members including Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alistair Stout as Ron and Arabella Stanton as Hermione.
Prior to the trio’s casting, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that John Lithgow (Albus Dumbledore), Paapa Essiedu (Severus Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid) and Janet McTeer (Minera McGonagall) were also cast in the Harry Potter series.

Johnny Flynn, who was born March 14, 1983, in Johannesburg, South Africa, and went to school in England, has 34 screen credits to date, according to his IMDb profile.
Flynn’s latest role came in 2024 in the eight-episode Netflix miniseries Ripley, an episodic adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s classic novel The Talented Mr. Ripley. Flynn stars in the series in the pivotal role of Dickie Greenleaf, a wayward vagabond who is murdered by a grifter, Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott), who assumes Dickie’s identity.
The Talented Mr. Ripley was first adapted as a film in 1999 with Matt Damon starring as Tom and Jude Law as Dickie. Ripley, meanwhile, was nominated for 13 Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, and won four Emmys in the technical categories.
Flynn made his screen debut in a guest role in the U.K. series Murder in Suburbia, in 2005. Flynn’s television credits include the Netflix comedy series Lovesick (2014-2018), the Comedy Central series Brotherhood (2015) and the BBC/PBS Masterpiece version of Les Misérables. Flynn played the supporting role of Felix in one episode in the 2018 miniseries adaptation of Les Misérables, which consisted of six episodes.
In addition, Flynn played the young Albert Einstein in the Nat Geo miniseries Genius: MLK/X, in 2028.
Flynn’s film credits include the 2014 psychological drama Clouds of Sils Maria, where he starred opposite Juliette Binoche, Kristen Stewart and Chloë Grace Moretz and period comedy/costume drama Emma, opposite Anya Taylor-Joy and Mia Goth.
In addition, Flynn starred as David Bowie in Stardust, a 2020 biopic about the young rock legend before his rise to fame, as well as future James Bond author Ian Fleming in the 2021 World War II drama Operation Mincemeat. In addition, Flynn voiced Bob Cratchit in Netflix’s animated version of Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.
In 2024, Flynn played the young version of Anthony Hopkins’ character Dicky Winton, in the biographical drama One Life.
There is no word yet on the release date of HBO’s Harry Potter series. In the press release announcing the nine new cast members Tuesday, Warner Bros. Discovery noted, “The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling.”
Other new cast members announced for the Harry Potter series Monday include Leo Earley as Hogwarts students Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil and Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown.
In addition, Katherine Parkinson will star as Molly Weasley, and Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby will play the Dursley parents, Petunia and Vernon. Bertie Carvel was also cast as Cornelius Fudge.
