Caleb Plant
Caleb Plant and Jermall Charlo have their sights set on a grudge match later this year, but both men have to take care of business on Saturday night. Plant will face Armando Resendiz in the main event while Charlo faces Thomas LaManna in the co-main event at the Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas.
If you can’t watch it live or you just want to follow along for my reactions, live scorecards for the featured fights and results from the prelim bouts, you’re in the right space.
The latest results and updates will appear below this paragraph. I’ll score Plant-Resendiz and Charlo-LaManna. I’ll deliver the results to the other fights on the card.
Plant-Resendiz and Charlo-LaManna Card Results
Plant vs. Resendiz – Mazique’s Scorecard – Even 95-95
Round 10 – Plant’s round wasn’t as bad as the commentators made it sound, but Resendiz pushed through to earn it in the final 40 seconds of the round. Resendiz, 10-9.
Round 9 – That was Plant’s best round since the second round of the fight. The commentators are a bit caught up in the moment. Plant did a good job in the ninth. Plant, 10-9.
Round 8 – Resendiz has taken control of the fight with more effective power punching, but he has been warned three times for headbutts. He could be penalized for it if he continues, which would be huge. Resendiz, 10-9.
Round 7 – Plant is surviving through fatigue and some damage. I gave him the round based on some combo and counter punching. He did a good job tying up Resendiz’s offenses, but I’m not sure how many more rounds he can duplicate that concept. Plant, 10-9.
Round 6 – Resendiz rocked Plant badly in the final seconds of the round. Were it not for the end of the frame, he may have put Plant down. The momentum is squrely in Resendiz’s favor. Also, Plant’s cornerman “Breadman” Edwards told Plant to “go low.” Hmm. Resendiz 10-9.
Round 5 – I gave Plant the round because of his combination work early in the round. However, he is beginning to look as if he is slowing down. He may have been hurt by some body punches. Resendiz has a chance to pull the upset, though he’s down a little on my card. Plant 10-9.
Round 4 – Resendiz is turning this into a brawl, which is the style of fight he needs. Plant is backing up, but not landing as often or as clean. This round was close, but I gave it to Resendiz. Resendiz, 10-9.
Round 3 – Resendiz came alive a bit in this round. He was on his way to losing another round being outboxed at distance, but he rescued the round with a pair of power shots in the final 30 seconds. Resendiz, 10-9.
Round 2 – Plant’s speed at a distance is an issue for Resendiz. He’s struggling to close the space. Neither man is doing damage, but Plant is outboxing him to this point. Resendiz needs to take some chances. Plant 10-9.
Round 1 – Plant clearly wants to keep this fight at a distance, at least early. His jab and range-finding controlled a mostly uneventful round. Plant 10-9.
- Jermall Charlo def. Thomas LeManna via sixth-round TKO
Charlo-LaManna – Mazique’s Scorecard – 50-43 Charlo at the time of the stoppage
Ringside doctor stops the fight. Thank you. This one was completely one-sided.
Round 5 – 10-8
Charlo scored another knockdown. LeManna pounded the canvas and got back up quickly, but at this point, someone should probably stop the fight. LeManna is getting blasted.
Round 4 – Charlo 10-8
More Charlo dominance in the fourth. The former champion scored another knockdown that needed replay for confirmation. LeManna is attempting to make this a childish mental battle, but he is getting pummeled.
Round 3 – Charlo 10-8
This fight is becoming increasingly one-sided. Charlo dropped LeManna after landing a right hand followed by a chopping shot that put his opponent down. He made it to his feet, but I will be surprised if this one makes it past the sixth.
Round 2 – Charlo 10-9
Charlo opened up a bit more in the second round. He landed some strong straight right hands and appears to be getting more of a rhythm. The clashed heads in the final 10 seconds, but it did not produce a cut.
Round 1 – Charlo 10-9
The former champion controlled the first round with his jab and the occasional combination. Easy work early on.
- Middleweight – Yoenli Hernandez def. Kyrone Davis via unanimous decision
I’m posting this image because it shows in-ring action and there are no Getty photos. However, the caption is a headscratcher. If this was a “Chess match,” Hernandez was the king and queen and Davis was the pawn for 10 rounds.
This fight was never close as Hernandez won 100-89 on all three judges scorecards.
Hernandez is 100% ready for a title shot. He dropped Davis who looked flat and even more gun shy than normal.
Hernandez reportedly doesn’t want to fight his Cuban countryman and WBA champion Erislandy Lara, though he is his No. 1 contender. Despite having just eight pro fights, he is as ready as anyone in the division to challenge unified IBF and WBO champion Janibek Alimkhanuly for his title.
Hernandez is a much-needed potential star in the middleweight division.
