NASM has revamped its MMA conditioning course as combat sports consumers seek skilled trainers

With interest in mixed martial arts on the rise, the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) has launched an updated version of its Mixed Martial Arts Conditioning Specialization (MMACS) course.

The interactive online program is designed to give trainers and coaches a more structured, evidence-based approach to working with athletes across a range of combat sports, including MMA, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, jiu jitsu, judo, taekwondo and karate. Upon completion of the course, participants earn a professional credential.

“We are thrilled to introduce the updated MMACS course, which reflects our commitment to providing the highest quality education for fitness professionals and martial arts conditioning coaches,” NASM head of product Mike Fantigrassi said. “This course offers a unique blend of technical training, functional anatomy, sport psychology, conditioning, recovery and nutrition science, empowering coaches and trainers to cultivate exceptional athletes across various combat disciplines.”

In addition to creating pathways for fitness professionals, MMA-style training is fueling franchise growth as more people gravitate toward workouts that build discipline, strength and mental resilience. One example is UFC Gym, an official extension of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which plans to open more than 45 locations worldwide this year. The brand is also set to debut its Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) studios – a new franchise model that blends the full-body intensity and mental discipline of BJJ with UFC Gym’s signature programming.
