Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti has already signed a contract to take over as the Brazil national team manager at the end of the season according to The Athletic, which cited anonymous sources shortly before the Brazilian football federation known as the CBF confirmed the development in a statement shared by Globo.

The Italian still had around 13 months left on his deal at the Bernabeu, penned approaching the turn of 2024, but he was expected to either be dismissed or resign at the conclusion of the current term which has seen Madrid’s bitter rival FC Barcelona exert newfound domestic dominance.

Ancelotti sealed record-extending La Liga and Champions League titles in 2023/2024 for Madrid, but he’s been unable to replicate such success despite the high profile arrival of Kylian Mbappe.

Mbappe’s move to the Spanish capital on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain saw Los Blancos tipped to mount a dynasty, but they have struggled amid landing the UEFA Super Cup and Intercontinental Cup.

Madrid has lost four consecutive Clasicos to Barca including the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey finals, with the latest defeat on Sunday by a 4-3 margin in Montjuic most probably handing the Catalants the La Liga crown thanks to a seven-point margin with three games to spare.

The Monday morning following the Clasico saw transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano report that Ancelotti’s replacement Xabi Alonso has already agreed to man the Bernabeu dugout until mid-2028.

El Chiringuito reported that Alonso will do so from June 1 onwards to coincide with the reimagined Club World Cup in the United States, which kicks off later that month.

Then a few hours after Romano’s post, his counterpart at The Athletic David Ornstein tweeted a link to his article on Ancelotti’s Brazil appointment.

“Carlo Ancelotti appointed head coach of Brazil,” Ornstein wrote, with the Italian set to leave Real Madrid “after final La Liga fixture vs Real Sociedad” while starting his new job on May 26.

“Contracts signed following cordial negotiations led by Diego Fernandes for CBF,” Ornstein concluded.

In an article by Globoesporte, the Brazilian outlet shared a statement from CBF chief Ednaldo Rodrigues.

“Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to lead Brazil is more than a strategic move. It is a statement to the world that we are determined to reclaim the top spot on the podium. He is the greatest coach in history and now he is leading the greatest team on the planet. Together, we will write new glorious chapters in Brazilian football,” it read.

A new era for Ancelotti and Real Madrid

After this season has been wrapped up then, both Ancelotti and Real Madrid will enter new eras. While Ancelotti makes a maiden foray until international soccer, Madrid is expected to be led by former midfielder Alonso who must succeed where his predecessor failed in topping Hansi Flick and Barca.
