Christopher Nolan’s 2014 sci-fi epic Interstellar zoomed back into IMAX theaters for a two-week special engagement in early December. How did it fare at the box office?
Interstellar began its exclusive run on Dec. 6 in 165 North American IMAX theaters. Most of the screenings were in IMAX digital, but the film was also presented in IMAX 70mm in select locations.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, who wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonathan Nolan, Interstellar originally opened in limited release on Nov. 5, 2014, before opening nationwide on Nov. 7, 2015.
The logline for Interstellar reads, “When Earth becomes uninhabitable in the future, a farmer and ex-NASA pilot, Joseph Cooper, is tasked to pilot a spacecraft, along with a team of researchers, to find a new planet for humans.”
Matthew McConaughey stars as Cooper, who is joined on the interstellar mission by Dr. Emilia Brand (Anne Hathaway) and her fellow scientists Doyle (Wes Bently) and Romilly (David Gyasi).
Interstellar also stars Jessica Chastain as the grown-up version of Cooper’s daughter, Murph (Mackenzie Foy), as well as Casey Affleck as the grown-up version of Cooper’s son, Tom (Timothée Chalamet). John Lithgow also stars as Cooper’s father-in-law, Donald) and Michael Caine rounds out the cast as Emilia’s father Dr. Brand.
According to Box Office Mojo, Interstellar—which was originally scheduled for a one-week engagement—expanded from 165 to 321 IMAX locations for a second week in theaters. Per the box office tracker, Interstellar made $15.2 million in its two-week special engagement domestically, which ended on Dec. 10.
Combined with the $9.3 million the film made in international ticket sales during various periods this fall, the worldwide tally for Interstellar’s 2024 re-release ended up at $24.5 million.
Where Does The Overall Box Office Total For ‘Interstellar’ Stand?
During its original box office run in 2014, Interstellar made $188 million domestically and $493 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $681 million, reports Box Office Mojo.
Adding in the $15.2 million made in its recent North American re-release, the domestic tally for Interstellar now stands at $203.2 million.
Combined with the $526.5 million the film has made in initial theatrical release and subsequent re-releases internationally, the worldwide box office tally for Interstellar stands at $729.9 million.
According to Box Office Mojo, Interstellar had a production budget of $165 million before prints and advertising.
Viewers who missed Interstellar during its two-week IMAX engagements still have other ways to see the film.
Currently Interstellar is streaming on Paramount+ and Prime Video, and Paramount Pictures Home Entertainment recently released a special 10th Anniversary Collector’s Edition of the film on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray.
