A day after firing their former executive vice president David Griffin, the New Orleans Pelicans have found his replacement in Joe Dumars. Dumars has been hired as New Orleans’ new president of basketball operations. As New Orleans moves in a new direction they have decided that Dumars will be the one to bring their franchise back to relevance.
Dumars, most known for his playing days with the “Bad Boy” Detroit Pistons, has plenty of experience being in charge of a franchise’s basketball decisions. Dumars was the general manager of the Detroit Pistons from 2000-2014. In his time with the franchise he was named the 2003-04 NBA executive of the year, and he also built Detroit’s 2004 title team and 2005 eastern conference championship team. While Dumars was at the helm in Detroit for their peak moments, he was also at the helm for many of their low moments, where the franchise missed the playoffs for several years in a row.
Talks between Dumars and New Orleans heated up quickly, as it was first reported by Shams Charania that they were in discussions yesterday. New Orleans likely believes in Dumars’ track record based on his success with the pistons in the early 2000’s. It will be a wait and see process to ascertain whether or not Dumars can succeed in this era, seeing as how the game has changed drastically since he was with Detroit.
