Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande’s Wicked has officially ended its run in theaters. How much did the hit adaptation of the Broadway musical make at the box office?
Rated PG, Wicked was released in theaters on Nov. 20, 2024. The official summary for the film partially reads, “Wicked, the untold story of the witches of Oz, stars Erivo as Elphaba, a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin who has yet to discover her true power, and Grande as Glinda, a popular young woman gilded by privilege who has yet to discover her true heart.
“The two meet as students at Shiz University in the fantastical Land of Oz and forge an unlikely but profound friendship. Following an encounter with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, their friendship reaches a crossroads and their lives take very different paths. Their extraordinary adventures in Oz will ultimately see them fulfill their destinies as Glinda the Good and the Wicked Witch of the West.”
Directed by Jon M. Chu from a screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, Wicked also stars Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Ethan Slater as Boq, Marissa Bode as Nessarose, Bowen Yang as Pfannee and Peter Dinklage as the voice of Dr. Dillaman.
As indicated by The Numbers weekly theater count report, Wicked has ended its run in North American theaters. Per the box office tracker, Wicked last reported day at the box office was Thursday, when it made $$11,385 to boost its final domestic tally to $473,231,120.
Coupled with the $261,471,076 the film made internationally, Wicked, per The Numbers, ended its worldwide theatrical run with $734,690,811 against a production budget of $145 million before prints and advertising costs.
According to Deadline, Wicked had a worldwide P&A budget of $150 million.

‘Wicked’ Topped A Box Office Milestone For Movie Musicals
According to Billboard, Wicked set a new record for the highest-grossing movie adaptation of a Broadway musical on Dec. 29, when the film hit the $634.4 million mark at the worldwide box office.
The previous record-holder was the 2008 film adaptation of the ABBA Broadway musical Mamma Mia! During its theatrical run, Billboard noted, Mamma Mia! made $611.5 million worldwide.
Wicked received big attention during awards season with multiple nominations from the likes of the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, Screen Actors Guild Awards and British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards — where Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress by each of the awards bodies. The film also received a Best Picture nomination by the Producers Guild Awards.
Wicked also scored 10 Oscar nominations for the 97th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress for Erivo and Best Supporting Actress for Grande. The film won two Oscars — for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design.
The Wicked movie experience will continue for filmgoers later this year, when the second part of the tale — Wicked: For Good — opens in theaters on Nov. 21.
