ForbesToday’s ‘Wordle’ #1340 Hints, Clues And Answer For Tuesday, February 18thBy Erik Kain

It’s Wordle Wednesday which means you get an extra puzzle to solve before we solve today’s Wordle. Each week, I dole out a special riddle or brain-teaser in order to keep things spicy and interesting. Here’s today’s:

The Royal Messengers

A royal messenger leaves the castle at dawn, riding his horse at a steady speed of 8 miles per hour. His mission is to deliver an urgent letter to a village 40 miles away.

However, after 2 hours, the king realizes he forgot to include an important detail in the letter. He sends a second rider to chase the messenger, galloping at 12 miles per hour.

Will the second rider catch up with the first in time to amend the message?

I’ll post the answer in tomorrow’s Wordle guide. Feel free to message me with your answer on Twitter, Instagram, Bluesky or Facebook in the meantime.

Now let’s solve this Wordle!

Wordle Analysis

Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here.

According to Wordle Bot, TROPE is a very strong opening guess but it was unlucky today, leaving me with 391 remaining possible solutions and zero yellow or green boxes. SNAIL inched me closer with 14 words remaining and a couple yellow boxes to work with. BALMY slashed that number to just one: MADLY for the win!

Competitive Wordle Score

I get o points for guessing in four and -1 for losing to the Bot. Oh well!

How To Play Competitive Wordle

  • Guessing in 1 is worth 3 points; guessing in 2 is worth 2 points; guessing in 3 is worth 1 point; guessing in 4 is worth 0 points; guessing in 5 is -1 points; guessing in 6 is -2 points and missing the Wordle is -3 points.
  • If you beat your opponent you get 1 point. If you tie, you get 0 points. And if you lose to your opponent, you get -1 point. Add it up to get your score. Keep a daily running score or just play for a new score each day.
  • Fridays are 2XP, meaning you double your points—positive or negative.
  • You can keep a running tally or just play day-by-day. Enjoy!

Today’s Wordle Etymology

The word madly comes from mad (meaning insane, foolish, or intense in emotion) + -ly, a suffix used to form adverbs. Mad itself originates from Old English gemǣdde (past participle of gemǣdan, meaning “to make insane”), which is related to gemād (“insane, foolish”). This traces back to the Proto-Germanic ga-maidaz (“changed, insane”). The adverbial form madly has been in use since the late Middle Ages, meaning “in a mad manner” or “with great intensity.”
