Baidu’s Revenue Slides After Chinese AI Rivalry Heats Up

(Bloomberg) — Baidu Inc. reported a smaller-than-expected revenue drop, alleviating concerns its internet search and artificial intelligence businesses are buckling under fierce competition.

Most Read from Bloomberg

Revenue for the three months ended December shrank 2% to 34.1 billion yuan ($4.7 billion), versus an average estimate of 33.4 billion yuan. Net income grew, in part because of a one-time gain related to foreign currency and accounting changes.

Baidu kicks off a closely watched earnings season for China’s trillion-dollar tech industry, which is captivating investors after Hangzhou startup DeepSeek stunned Silicon Valley by releasing AI models rivaling or surpassing Western peers. Shares in sector heavyweights from Tencent Holdings Ltd. to Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. have surged — a broad rally that Baidu largely missed.

The generative AI boom showed up via a 26% quarterly jump in Baidu’s cloud revenue — more than twice the pace of growth in the previous three months. But that rise, driven by services provided to startups and developers chasing computing power, was overshadowed by signs of weakness in Baidu’s core business.

On search, it’s losing eyeballs and advertising dollars to social apps including Xiaohongshu and ByteDance Ltd.’s Douyin, while combating an economic downturn. And in AI, DeepSeek’s breakthrough — built on top of open-source models and ultra-low training costs — undercuts Baidu’s yearslong approach to push proprietary technology.

The company’s shares slid more than 4% in pre-market trading in New York.

Last week, the Beijing-based company made a surprise move to open-source its models too. It also integrated DeepSeek’s newest R1 model into its flagship chatbot, mirroring a move by Tencent.

Baidu may be squandering its leadership in AI. The company was first among Chinese tech leaders to roll out large language models to the public, and it was quick to commercialize its ChatGPT-style Ernie — with an $8 monthly subscription fee. It’s refunding users after making the app free.

What Bloomberg Intelligence Says

Baidu’s weak operating metric underscores the scale of its challenges, as adjusted operating profit fell 29% annually to $5 billion, driven by a hefty 7% decline in Baidu Core Ad sales. Margin dropped below expectations in Baidu Core and iQIYI, despite a 21% downward revision in consensus EPS in the last three months. Strengthening momentum in Baidu’s AI Cloud business provides encouragement, though lower margin in this business won’t offset the weakness in Ads.

Still, Baidu remains among the frontrunners in Chinese AI investment. It’s working with Apple Inc. to build features including image search for the iPhone’s AI system in China, Bloomberg News reported last week. A higher-stake task of content censorship, though, falls on Alibaba, as Apple targets a launch by the middle of this year.

Executives on Tuesday said Baidu was sticking with its focus on developing apps for future use cases.

“While AI chatbots represent an important but early phase in AI application development, the killer app today has not yet emerged,” interim Chief Financial Officer Junjie He told analysts on a post-earnings call. “For us, the key is to maintain this rapid and determined pace of AI transformation, focusing on discovering what users truly need and want for the next generation of search.”

Billionaire founder Robin Li was conspicuously absent in state media coverage of a high-profile meeting with Xi Jinping Monday, when tech moguls like Jack Ma and chiefs from a new generation of startups (including DeepSeek) shook hands with the Chinese leader.

His apparent absence could raise questions about whether Baidu is falling out of favor with Beijing, which is counting on the private sector to revive the world’s second-largest economy. On Tuesday, Li joined the earnings call to talk about Baidu’s initiatives from AI to robotaxis and search.
